Law in teaching

Legally compliant teaching

Acting with legal certainty in teaching is an important requirement for teachers – and students. There are a few things to consider: An initial frame of reference is the Universities of Applied Sciences Act. Furthermore, the copyright law becomes effective when third-party materials are used.

For lecturers at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, the Study and Examination Regulations of the FH Carinthia are relevant.

If you want to learn more about legally compliant teaching regardless of time and place, the free iMooX self-study course “E-Learning & Law” provides a good overview of legal topics in the area of teaching & learning. Simply log in with your FH(-Kärnten) access data to complete the MOOC.

Legal aspects of teaching have been an integral part of the further education program at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences for several years now. In the past, training courses have been offered on the fundamentals of educational law, as well as online courses on copyright law, plagiarism, and related topics. Since 2019, the topic of OER (Open Educational Resources) has also been actively addressed at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and the use and creation of its own free educational materials has been promoted.

Open Educational Resources (OER)

Since 2021, the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences has had an Open Educational Resources Policy which advocates and supports the use, exchange and creation of free educational materials in the university context. This policy encourages employees and students of the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences to inform themselves about OER and to produce OER themselves and make them publicly available.

In addition to the OER Policy, once a year the Didactics Center offers a further education course of 1 ECTS credit focusing on the process of designing OER. The aim of the training, which is organized in a blended learning format, is to acquire skills in the field of OER and to independently create free teaching and learning materials.

Did you know? An internal repository for OER at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences is being planned.
