Moodle Minute: Using Safe Exam Browser

Exams in Moodle have many advantages, such as reusability, a variety of question types, question pools (which allow randomization of exams), compliance with exam regulations and data protection guidelines, etc. To additionally ensure a safe exam environment at the campuses, the ICT team and the Didactics Center have implemented the Safe Exam Browser “SEB” (an open source browser) of ETH Zurich. The SEB can be used for smaller groups (under 20 people) in all IT rooms on campus, as well as for larger groups. For larger groups, the SEB is installed on the students “private laptops so that examinations can then only be taken on the Carinthia UAS carpus in larger rooms; a so-called ‘BYOD’ (bring your own device) examination. If required, the SEB and the configuration files are installed in advance on the students” BYOD devices under the supervision of the ICT team. Students without laptops etc. also have the option of borrowing a device for the exam.

The SEB effectively locks the computer screen of the PC/laptop so students only have access to Moodle exam and preconfigured programs such as Excel, Word and the Windows calculator. Other programs and or web sites can be configured upon request for use during an exam. For Moodle exams using the SEB in EDV-rooms, it is recommended to use the login (username: prüfung, password: pruefung) to provide an extra level of security. BYOD exams can be defined in aCTIons in order to ensure IKT/ DZ support.
